Chinese Furniture - Craftsmanship
All of our pieces are handcrafted in workshops in the Xiangshang area of East China. Ther area is reknowned for its historic roots in Chinese furniture manufacture and as far as possible our craftsmen follow traditional methods of joinery to achieve a contemporary look based on an antique oriental style.
The majority of flat sections such as table surfaces, wardrobe doors, and cabinet side panels are made with a frame which is constructed using mortise and tenon joints. With a grooved inside edge the frame accepts the insertion of a solid wood panel with a reciprocal protruding edge. Wooden hinges are used on all pieces throughout the collection and the general construction methodology is typical of traditional chinese furniture manufacture.
All pieces in the collection are constructed in solid wood sections with the exception of certain non-visible sections which are made of jia-bam (pressed wood); for example the rear section of pieces which are designed for storage against a flat wall are constructed from this material, as are some of the smaller drawer sections. All other elements are constructed from solid wood and as part of our made to measure service it is possible to commission furniture pieces with solid wood sections throughout.
All of the brass handles, hinges and pins that are used in the collection are cut to shape by hand in the workshop or are cast locally.
We work closely with our craftsmen to create designs without impacting on the traditional methods used in construction and take great pride in our oriental furniture collection.
