The finishing techniques for Chinese black lacquer furniture have been refined and developed over many centuries. Our craftsmen follow the traditional hand painted multi-layering process which provides a high-quality "matt black" feel rather than the more garish and imposing high gloss finish that is indicative of the poorer quality single layer surfaces often seen on the high street. We feel that the more time consuming lacquering process we adhere to as Zenzu results in some of the highest quality surface finishing of its kind.

Coloured Lacquer Furniture - Finishing

Black Lacquer furniture and Red Lacquer furniture are thought of as the most reminiscent of Chinese antiquity, but other colours have regularly been used throughout the different dynasties, often in tandem with ornate painting and patterning. Zenzu applies a classic black lacquer and red lacquer finish to many items in its collection, but as part of our blended approach we incorporate many wider influences. Whether is be oriental apple greens, rustic European pastels, or modern metallic shades, the collection presents a truly eclectic range of colour finishing.

Natural Grain Brown Furniture - Finishing

As opposed to the layering process used for Black Lacquer Furniture, all of the Natural Grain Brown pieces in the oriental furniture collection are stained to an exact specification to ensure commonality throughout the range. Using traditional techniques our dark timber finish combines the traditional feel of chinese heritage with a look which can be easily incorporated into the mood of a contemporary home.

Hand-painted Patterning

All of Zenzu's patterned peices are painted by hand, giving each its own unique feel. The patterns we use are copied from traditional Qing and Ming era designs and include gold coloured butterflies, bamboo, pastoral scenes and floral borders. As all of our designs are individually painted by artists in the workshop no piece is exactly alike and patterns may differ slightly from those seen throughout the Zenzu website catalogue. Our Black Lacquer furniture provides the traditional background for these designs but we can hand-paint patterns onto custom background colours based on your own interior design schemes.
